HERE COMES THE "CATCH-22"! -MARGARET-

HALLEUAH!  God be praised! I have succesively endured reading the mind-spliting book! Well, actually it was quite interesting in some parts , and I  just loved the way the auther experesed his opinions.

This book is about a life of a man who was alive in the most terrible times on an era. It was Captain Joseph Yossarian, a World War II bombardier who was stationed on the island of Pianosa. He was  an individualist who seeked to protect his own life by fleeing to the hospital, since  “catch-22” in the Air Force regulations prevents him from being grounded for illness or obtaining to leave the battle ground. He actually enjoys living in the ward, where all his meals are served to him, and where he could get whatever he pleased. In turn, he simply needs to fake a  pain in his liver and censor the letters of the enlisted men. However, as he was adapted to excitment, he soon became terribly bored by his job. So Yossarian takes on a play “Washington Irving” and pretends to be Chaplain Tappman.  Alarmed by these strange occurrences from nowhere, the government sends two C.I.D. men to investigate and to make no other interruptions be made.  Other men also seek the haven of the hospital by faking illness, but after the mysterious death of the soldier in white (who a surgeon smuggled in)  the Texan forces them to return to the front.

On the front, the other men are equally as crazy as the Yossarian( who had now completly belived that everyone was trying to kill him), or even more. His roommate, Orr, crash-lands every time he goes on a mission and talks about putting apples and horse chestnuts in his cheeks. Clevinger, a Harvard graduate, argues with Yossarian about whether or not people must obey their institutions and fight the war. Havermeyer munches on peanut butter brittle all the time, loves to shoot innocent field mice with his pistol, and earns the wrath of his men by never taking evasive action on a mission. Doc Daneeka, the ward's doctor, is a freak  who enlarges everyone else's illnesses rather than treating them.

In this situation the yossarian lives on and the book ends in a still super confusing time and the air force dealing with the yossarian whether to let him go home.

It must have taken a genious to write such a book and to simultaneously understand it. Some chapters I couldn't understand  what the author was trying to express, but it still did not stop me from marveling over the majestic sentences. I really hope I learned something from this. However, the yossarian would not be the only person with such a story. I really looking forward to read ing more stories related with this era.

A guy setting fire because of money

There was an incident in Daejeon. It was on September 10th. At 2 o'clock, a 50 years old guy set fire on his house and the fire burned about 10 square meters. The reason why this old guy set fire is because he asked his old mother to give him 100,000 won as his pocket money, but his mother refused it. So the guy caused the fire. He always get money to go to PC room and play games and at this time, he was drunken so he obviously was asking for money. Finally, his mother just ran away to her neighbor's house, and then the 50 years old guy committed the crime.

SOMWTHING i LEARNED FROM A BAD EXPERIENCE -MARGARET-

To say the truth, I have not encountered much bad experience in my life, or any. Of coarse I always ended up being included in every school-trouble, but excepting that, I have always been a girl with seven lucky stars. But to point out one of the main reasons which makes me get in a nice bundle of trouble is my carelessness.

During the first month when I came back to korea, I had two diaries. One was a very clean -and-what-teachers-like note book to write what I had to HAND IN. Really, I seriously can not understand or tolerate that somebody is allowed to read and even write down on ones special diary. I have always believed that diaries are personal, and who reading another's is a most disgraceful thing to do. So I was just horrified when my form teacher made a rule to submit our diaries twice a week. And, oh, poor me, that's how come I made my own special diary where I can write down what really felt like and get rid of all the stress. But how would I have known that such behavior would pull along such a disaster?
For weeks I handed in my super polite, sweet diary to the teacher, and hided my secrete diary at home. Until one day my head was spinning like mad and I don't know how I did it but I actually switched the two diaries and did not even notice it. That's how my teacher got to read all my private things and polluted my diary with her irritating red pen.
I am trying to change my careless behaviors as much as possible,
but still it's not my fault that I can't cure it ! It's in the genes.

After reading 'catch-22'

Finally, I finished reading the book ‘catch-22’ by Joseph Heller. It was really really boring book that it took 2 weeks to read because the worst subject to me is history and this book is just about that! Anyway, Catch-22 follows Captain John Yossarian in his exploits as a bombardier (that is, a member of a fighter plane crew that is in charge of aiming and releasing bombs) in the U.S. Air Force during World War II. Yossarian had one wish: to survive the madness of wartime culture. He's convinced that everyone is trying to kill him, a notion that sometimes arises in a war where…everyone is trying to kill one another. Yossarian has to survive the dangerous combat missions he flies, while Colonel Cathcart continues to increase the number of missions his men must complete. And the thing is that at last, he completes his mission. This book was really boring. I don’t know why people buy this book probably some adults that want to know about this would read it but I think that it is not for the grade fives. And also, I don’t like long books, I don’t like history, and I don’t like wars, and there were some swearing words……! It still told me lots of thing but still, this was super boring book!

ALL BECAUSE OF A BUS ACCIDENT. -MARGARET-

I have never heard the name, FRIDA KAHLO and thought of her as a ordinary person, but when my pupil was at the last sentence of a article that said about her, I knew I was completely wrong .

One of the most famous female artists, Frida Kahlo was an artist genious. To many people, it was just terrific to teach himself with out a tutor and be brilliant in it. However, this is what our heroin, Frida Kahlo did. She taught herself how to paint, and did the work well. Her bold painting roamed all world and dazzled all the critics. But would have anyone guessed what had made her turn to such a career? Well, nobody would, if one happened to be involved in a tragic bus accident.

She first started making paintings after she was badly hurt in a bus accident when she was just a eighteen years old care-free girl, with nothing in her way, happy as one can be. When she was forced to rest while her broken bones healed, Kahlo made her first self-portraits to get rid of all the stress and pressure she was under.

Born on July 6, 1907, Kahlo grew up in the family's home-Casa Azul, which in other words means the blue house. She was only a school girl when she met artist Diego Rivera - her future husband- for the first time. They were later married after the famous bus accident which was the turning point of Kahlo's life. The two had a stormy relationship and Kahlo was saddened by her failed efforts to have a child. When she was approached and asked about her dream, it was to become a mother of her very own children. However, as the world's way of doing things, nothing can be perfect. Because of her health conditions, her fate was to die as a celebrated painter, not as a loving, caring mother.

Having many barriers and obstacles, many of the hardships Kahlo experienced found their way on to her canvases. When her brush was on the canvas, it was like magic. In just a quick flick a wonderful painting would be produced. She often painted images of herself, her family, and her relationships in colours which she thought would suit them best. She also added animals, especially monkeys, to give a joyful and friendly image.

Over time, Kahlo became well known for her unusual and vivid works. She showed her art in many parts of the world, drawing interest from critics and art collectors. They were attracted with the way how she depicted things- a way nobody would have and could have. Today Frida Kahlo is considered one of the leading Mexican artists of the twentieth century as well as one of the pioneering women in art. Her paintings can be seen in many leading museums around the world, and her beloved Blue House is now a museum dedicated to her life and work. Her self portraits carries with it a message of pain. "I paint self-portraits because I am so often alone, because I am the person I know best.

As I read the article, I felt a sudden sharp pain in my heart. You see I don't really think that I know myself much. So from now on, I would have to step up closer to my reflection. But it's not entirely my fault. There's nobody to tell me or instruct me in my ways, and nobody to tell me what they think about me. So I remain as a mirror with no reflection to look. And not only me , but a whole bunch of people.

Freedom to the slaves - Alan

During the class I learned about the history of slaves, I have learned a lot of things that have changed my mind about the slaves. At first, I thought slaves only worked in the plantation but after learning about it, I started to think that there were a lot of different things they had to do. Also, I used to think that slaves could not escape and had to work and be slaves forever, but now I know that they can escape by lot of different ways. I also learned about the most important thing, about the Underground Railroad. Now, I understand how the Underground Railroad got its name.

First, I will talk about the tasks that they had to do. Many Slaves had to work in the terrible condition. Slaves usually worked from before sunrise until after dark in the rice, cotton of bean field. So I understand that it was really hard to live in such harsh conditions. I used to think that they couldn’t work inside but now, I know that they could do it. I the book called “Sweat Clara and its Freedom Quilt”, Clara, a young girl, couldn’t do the hard works on the plantation. So, she worked inside as a sewer. Now, I am beginning to think that they can work inside as a cook or a sewer and sometimes, slaves got paid so they could save some money and buy themselves.

A lot of people couldn’t just follow their owners and do whatever their owner wanted. So some decided to escape. There were a lot of different ways to escape but still, there was a great danger that a lot of them might be caught. I used to think that the only way that they can escape was to walk or run secretly to Canada or to the north side. For example, in the book called “Underground Railroad”, there were some different ways to escape. One basic thing was to pretend to be someone else. There was a group of 28 slaves and they escaped together. Hunters were kept tracking them. So the slaves decided pretend that they were driving to a funeral. The hunters never thought to stop the funeral carriages so they drove to safety. Also, in the book called “Henry’s Freedom box”, Henry hid in the mailbox that was going to go to the north side and that was so successful that he went to the north without getting caught.

There was also one more way to escape to the freedom. The saves could travel on the Underground Railroad. I used to think that Underground Railroad was the railroad under the ground but now, I understand why it was “Underground Railroad” It was named like this because of the runaway slave named Tice Davids. On day in 1831, he was escaping from his owner and he was crossing the lake and suddenly, he just vanished. Therefore, the owner thought he escaped to the underground road. So now, everyone called it Underground Railroad. Also, there were some people who were helping the slaves to escaped by helping them when day are traveling through the Underground Railroad. Those people had their own special names. People who helped the slaves, gave them some food, and gave them a place to sleep were called conductor. By traveling on the Underground Railroad, some slaves could safely be free. Now, I am beginning to think that there were a lot of people who disagreed about the slavery.

I conclusion, I changed my mind of a lot of things especially about the tasks that they had to do, ways that they escaped, and the Underground Railroad. I hope that we will learn about the slaves and its history next month too!

(I just wrote any random things)

Something I learn from the bad experience - Alan

Do you know the proverb “If a crow-tit tries to walk like a stork he will break his legs?” The bad thing that happened to me was just like this. Of course I learned lots of things but when I look back on that again I think I was stupid that time and now I am a little angry. Ah~~~ I just want to go back and change the past!

It happened when I was in Canada. I was chosen for the DSBN track and field, 100m race, in my school so I was really pleased because it is the second time that the Koreans are going that track and field and the first one was my brother! Anyway because of that I practiced really a lot I woke up every morning at 6a.m. and ran for about 1 hour and then, I went to school. And also in the lunch time, we have the practice again. So I usually practiced about 2 hours a day. It was really good and I felt that I could win the game but not after the “bad thing” happened.

The bad thing happened the day before I had the race. As usual, I was just practicing in the lunch time at school and, and…… I twisted my ankle! O.M.G. It hurt so much that I couldn’t even run for a while but still I had to do that race. So I went to the park, where the track and field took place. I had really bad feeling about that and it was right. When I was getting ready to run and when it was a few seconds before the race got start, and WHEN IT STARTED, my ankle got twisted and I almost fell down and barely I stood up and run. And the ranking was really really really bad. I got only fifth. However, the first on ran 100m in 13.97 second but my best score was 12.87 second!

I learned that it is not good to the thing that is really hard to do, and for me that was running 2 hours a day. I think because of that my ankle got twisted. I learned that if you do something that is really hard for you, it only harms you. I think that this knowledge will help me to later in my life too. If I have to do really hard thing in the future, probably I will think about this thing that I learned and I think it will help me a lot.

essay-Lina

I think this story was all the way when I was in the day care or in the pre school. We had a english word test and word was "cream" and I could not think of it I just could not and lucky me I had a eraser that was a shape of an ice cream cone. And in the middle it wrote "cute ice cream" and I was so happy and that minute my day care teacher found out what I was doing and after the test she told me to write that letter ten times. When I was little I thought that the number ten was the biggest number in the world.I was shocked and from then on I did not copied other people's work. Okay I lied when I was in pre school we had a word test again and there was a word"elephant" and I couldn't think of the spelling and I lied to the teacher tha if I can go to the washroom and"in an acciadent" I looked at my partner's sheet and in my honory he worte it and I "accidantly copied his work"
and I had got a 100 percent but the teachers found it strange how come I  got a 100 percent because everybody got at least one wrong. The teacher asked me if I had copied anybody and the thing is my face turned in to a red fire.I was not expert at lying and I told the truth and I got punished and that that that moment till right now I promised not to copy other people's work.

catch 22-Lina

I just read a novel that called catch-22 this novel was based during world war 2 and I felt it was really interasting. The book was about an army during world war 2 and there was a man named Yossiran.
He was in the army called catch-22.Yossiran, a hero endlessly intentive in his shems to save his skin from the terriable and horrible war.His efforts are totally understandable becuase when he suddenly scrambles tthe people that Yossiran that even didn't meet yet are trying to kill him!The problem was Colonel Cathart, who keep rising numbers of missions the men must fly to complete there survices.Yet if he makes any attempts to excuse himself from the perilous missions that he is committed to flying,he is trapped by the Great Loyalty Oath Crusade, The title means:a man completes a dangeorous mission and he is willing for it(I think). And the whole point of this book is that Yossiran  completes his mission.I like the book because it was hiliriouse but there were some swearing words but I can understand. I was very intersted because it was a historical fiction book and I love it! Well the point is this book is soooo thick ^^... This was the funniest book that I had ever read in my life!
